A smart city (SC) is a metropolis that uses technology to improve its inhabitants' life quality, aiming to enhance operational efficiency, information exchange, and government services. Furthermore, SCs aim for citizens' integrity by optimizing functions and encouraging economic growth. The idea is to improve people's living conditions through tech.
What is a Smart City?
There are many ways to define a city as smart. In sum, it is a modernized urban area using technology to improve its residents' life quality.
Thanks to data availability's growth, optimizing and controlling resources is easier. Smart Cities integrate technological frameworks of information and communication to create and promote new methods facing urbanism challenges.
According to the European Commission, Smart Cities can provide the following:
- Public spaces with greater security
- Lighting and heating improvements
- Intelligent urban transport networks
- City administration and control in more responsive ways
- Infrastructure advances, like water supply and waste disposal
The UNECE defines SMCs through several elements:
- Data Access
- Electricity Meters
- Digital Government
- Smart Infrastructure
- Widespread home connectivity.
- Wi-Fi and connectivity in public areas.
When did Smart Cities arise?
It all started in the 60s and 70s when the Community Analysis Office integrated Cluster Analysis, Reports Issuance, Computer Databases, along with Data Collection via infrared aerial photography. As a result, three generations of smart cities rose:
- Smart Cities 1.0: Managed and controlled by IBM and other tech providers, this stage was a trial-and-error functionality period. An excellent example of an SC 1.0 is Songdo, South Korea.
- Smart Cities 2.0: World leaders assessed tech to create SCs, resulting in cities like Barcelona, Spain.
- Smart Cities 3.0: This model focuses on equity, citizen co-creation, and inclusivity, seen in cities like Australia, Vienna, and Vancouver.
How does a Smart City work?
To build a Smart City, it's essential to understand its basics. Among the principal activities are data analysis and progress measurement. Every SC follows a unique path but shares four leading steps:
- Data: Collecting data via sensors capable of real-time data collection.
- Analysis: A critical step after data collection that guides service supply and urban plans.
- Contact: Results from the analysis reach those responsible for decision-making.
- Action: Decision implementation leads to environmental stewardship, energy conservation, and intelligent traffic management.
What Makes a City Smart?
- Smart Buildings: Focus on optimal performance, energy efficiency, and renewable energy.
- Smart Energy: Aims to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy and includes smart power grids.
- Smart Homes: Optimizes energy usage and reduces expenses with integrated high-tech devices.
- Smart Mobility: Encompasses public or private transport powered by renewable energy and accessibility via digital apps.
- Intelligent Infrastructures: Merge physical elements to create modular and multifunctional environments.

SCs utilize IoT-tech sensors that gather networking information, aiding in traffic and energy management. According to Zion Market Research, the IoT market is projected to grow 22.6% to $330.1T in 2025.
Artificial Intelligence for Smart Cities
AI will enhance the efficiency of public supplies and preventive maintenance, controlling at least 87% of IoT connections by 2026.
Geospatial Technology for Smart Cities
Geospatial Tech offers solutions for transportation, security, and environmental management, with a projected turnover of 134.48 billion dollars by 2025.
Blockchain for Smart Cities
Blockchain promotes security and transparency in urban management, as seen in e-Residency solutions from Estonia, cutting bureaucracy.
