Smarter, Healthier Meals for Modern Offices

Industry:

Food

Capicua and Chewse joined forces to deliver a cutting-edge platform focused on experience and maturity, focused on promoting healthy meals in US offices.

Context

Chewse, founded in 2011 by Jon Cartwright and Ryan Spong in San Francisco, addresses the challenges faced by local restaurants and the unhealthy eating habits of office workers. The company connects offices with restaurants to deliver healthier meals directly to workplaces.

Expanding to over ten major US and Canadian cities, Chewse delivered more than 10M office catering meals before being acquired by Foodee. The company also fostered workplace community through shared meals and worked with food banks and local organizations.

Problem

As Chewse scaled rapidly across multiple cities, its operational complexity grew just as fast. The company was relying on third-party software to manage features such as restaurant network, menu scheduling, and order fulfillment. These tools were not purpose-built for Chewse's unique workflows and couldn't keep pace with its growth.

A particularly painful edge was menu management. Since each restaurant had dozens of items with unique attributes: allergens, cuisine styles, dietary flags, manually tracking details across a growing supplier base was error-prone and time-consuming.

Chewse's system could not sync menu data with scheduling logic, resulting in gaps that undermined both operational efficiency and the end-user experience. The team also needed a platform that matched its brand identity: clean, warm, and community-focused.

Solution

Capicua engaged deeply with the Chewse team, sending our UX Design team to San Francisco to run intensive Design Sprints on-site. This immersion allowed us to align the product's look and feel with the brand's identity and the day-to-day operation reality.

We built custom internal tools to automate manually-managed processes. We used Vue.js with the Vuetify component library for the front end, paired with Django on the back end and PostgreSQL for the database to build fast without sacrificing maturity or scalability.

A key piece of the solution was a CSV-based menu upload tool that dramatically simplified how Chewse onboarded new restaurant partners. We also integrated menu scheduling logic directly into the app and added multi-point validation to track dietary requirements and allergens for every item, ensuring accuracy at scale.

Success

The custom platform gave Chewse the operational backbone it needed to scale. Manual processes were replaced with automated workflows, reducing errors and saving time. The menu upload tool alone transformed an exhausting onboarding task into a routine operation.

The user-facing product now matched the quality and warmth of the Chewse brand, something the team had long wanted but couldn't achieve with off-the-shelf tools. Both internal staff and restaurant partners experienced a more streamlined, intuitive system.

Chewse went on to deliver over 10 million meals across North America and was successfully acquired by Foodee, validating the strength of the product and the business it supported.
